xXx: Return of Xander Cage marks the return of Vin Diesel to the franchise. But the real question is whether his return was effective or not? Check out the review below.
Starring in yet another ensemble movie, Vin Diesel manages to get the likes of Donnie Yen and Tony Jaa in the same frame. This time around, Deepika Padukone and Nina Dobrev are also part of the cast. The movie added the two actresses to show the various facets of female characters.
There’s Ruby Rose too in the movie who pretty much does what Gina Carano did in Fast & Furious 6. The only difference between the two is that Rose’s character sticks to Diesel’s side until the end of the movie. With Vin Diesel pretty much doing what he does in his other popular franchise, here is everything to see and note in the movie.
Cast of xXx: Return of Xander Cage
The movie has Vin Diesel, Donnie Yen, Tony Jaa, Deepika Padukone, Nina Dobrev, Ruby Rose, Samuel Jackson and many others. The addition of the A-list actors made this movie a perfect ensemble. There is a small cameo of Ice Cube and Neymar Jr. They are probably there to just make their presence felt for one or two minutes.
Story
The plot sees Vin Diesel’s character brought back from hiding by CIA’s Jane Marke. Much like how Dwayne Johnson’s Luke Hobbs used Letty to seek Dom’s help, Marke uses Gibbons’ death to seek Xander’s help. Cage is up against a rogue team of thieves with ghost identities quite similar to the specialized team Owen Shaw was running in Fast & Furious 6.
The team steals Pandora’s box, the ultimate weapon of destruction capable enough to bring down satellites. With him now aboard to do the right thing, he seeks out his own team. The next hour sees Xander socializing with the rogue team and doing stunts all over the place. It was until a major and perhaps the only twist appears.
Performances
Despite the fact that xXx: Return of Xander Cage looks very much like Fast & Furious 6 and Furious 7 mixed with extreme stunts and adventure, the movie is at least a one time watch. Diesel does what he does best and is probably one of the good things in the movie. Donnie Yen’s stunts too manage to impress as he makes a good sidekick for Vin’s character.
Tony Jaa appears to be underused and Deepika Padukone’s Serena stands up for both a bad girl and an anti-hero. Ruby Rose plays her “tough chick” role with ease and Nina Dobrev makes up for a hot nerd. Fans might want to watch the movie because this is Vin Diesel’s return to the franchise and going by reports, this will not be the last movie in the xXx franchise.
Sequel
Variety reported that Vin Diesel’s xXx: Return of Xander Cage could be getting a sequel. If Vin Diesel is to be believed than Paramount wants to make a fourth film and start work on it in May. It remains to be seen if a sequel will see the multi-cultural cast returning or not. xXx: Return of Xander Cage will release in the US on Jan. 20.
